Can your stiff back actually be a stuck survival instinct?
Does your back keep getting locked up in painful back spams more and more each year? And does it always feel stiff no matter how much you stretch? The reason for all these back problems might surprise you!
It’s all about survival
Your spine isn’t just a stack of bones. It’s the home of your spinal cord, the information superhighway that connects your brain to the rest of your body. Without it, you couldn’t move, feel, breathe, or even live. So when something threatens this vital structure, your body doesn’t take chances. It goes into full protection mode, no questions asked. But there’s a problem with that.
Your body’s outdated alarm system
Here’s where things get interesting (and frustrating). Your body’s threat detection system is a bit… outdated. It can’t distinguish between different types of threats. To your nervous system:
- A looming work deadline
- An argument with your partner
- Financial stress
…all feel remarkably similar to being chased by a predator.
In other words, your body is translating everyday emotional stress into physical danger. And its go-to response? Tensing up to protect that all-important spinal cord. Which takes you even further into the cycle we all know too well…
The vicious cycle of back pain
This protective response, while well-intentioned, can create a vicious cycle:
You experience stress → Your body perceives this as a vital threat → Your back muscles tense up → This tension causes pain → The pain becomes a new source of stress → Repeat
Ouch. So how do you catch a break?
The emotional solution
The key to breaking this cycle lies in training yourself to navigate emotional stress better, so your body doesn’t instinctively get stuck in protective mode. Find healthy ways to express how you feel. And allow emotions to move through and out of your body. This way, your spinal cord will not get triggered, and your back will finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
It all starts with emotional hygiene. Truly!
So the next time you feel frustrated with your tense, painful back, remember: it’s doing its best to protect you, carrying out a duty as old as humanity itself. It would rather keep you stiff and restricted than risk your safety. So help it out! Reduce some of the strain by showing your body you can deal with your emotions beautifully. Because of course you can ;-)
