What is the Rose - Thorn - Bud exercise ?
A simple yet powerful feedback technique used to gather positive points (Roses), pain points or concerns (Thorns), and opportunities or ideas (Buds) from participants. This method helps structure user feedback in a balanced way, highlighting what works, what doesn’t, and where there’s potential for improvement.
Example usage during a workshop at 1A
We used the Rose, Thorn, Bud exercise to collect participant feedback on our early concepts, based on five scenarios related to the “creation of a cabin bag product and its bundling with seat” use case. Each scenario illustrated a key moment in the flow and prompted users to reflect on their experience.
The scenarios included:
- Create a cabin bag product
- Retail a cabin bag product class quota
- Create a seat and cabin bag bundle
- The stock layer
- The retail layer
→ Validate the concept, test the clarity of the user flow, and assess the comprehension of terminology and labels used. → Refining the experience to better match user expectations and mental models.
